Everyday last week, from 9-12, Eldest learned a tasty dish or two. She came home with stories of bossy girls, detailed recipe descriptions, and a full tummy. (Seriously though, for the price I paid to put her in that summer class, she had better be fed something!)
Here was the line-up.
Monday: French Toast and Hotdogs
I don’t know about you, but somehow, I don’t think these two go together well. Anyway, I loved that she learned how to make French toast. It’s my favorite breakfast food. The boiled hotdog though? I won’t mind if she completely forgets how to make that one.
Tuesday: Hamburger and “Dirt Cups”
They actually used raw meat, added seasonings, and cooked the patties. I was impressed and worried at the same time. I get so paranoid just handling meat myself, let alone my 7 year old. At least I was informed that the teachers did go around to make sure all the burgers were full cooked before the kids ate them. And the “Dirt Cups?” I sooo want her to make it this weekend. I’ve never had one. It’s got some chocolate goodness in it. OF COURSE I want some.
Wednesday: Green Salad
Finally. Something healthy! The Hubs especially loves salads, so this was awesome. Now she can be the official salad maker around here.
Thursday: Summer Berry Cheesecake Pie
Oooh! Oooh! ME! I want some! Do I really need to stress the fact this is something she will need to memorize and make for me until the day I die? (Yah. Didn’t think so.)
Friday: Tortillas and Caramel Popcorn
This was a special day because the class “opened a restaurant” and each student had two guests come for lunch. The Hubs and I went (while my awesome mom watched the two young ‘uns). Each group had their own portable burner, pan, and bowls of ingredients. Each group cooked for their own guests. While I had to swallow down tortillas with raw onions and other raw ingredients inside it, it was, nonetheless, pretty good. The caramel popcorn was a pretty good dessert too.
We thought it was really cute watching them “work together” (as much as little kids do) and hear them talk about cooking. However, The Hubs and I made sure to point out to Eldest that if she was going to cook that for us at home, she had better cook the ingredients first. LOL.
And for your viewing pleasure, a short clip of the cooking action!

I see that was a yummy week. May I have some Cheesecake Pie?
It was definitely a yummy week for her. I’m still waiting for my share of cheesecake pie too!
Hope the waiting will over soon

This is a great idea to get kids cooking… we are pretty lucky that all three of ours love to be involved and they each help in their own way. The pictures are so cute. I couldn’t see the video, though. ;(

That’s awesome they all help. I hope it will be like that when my toddler gets bigger.
As for the videi… sorry. I’m still trying to find a good plugin that doesn’t require me to load the video on youtube first. Got any suggestions?

what a great class idea for kids! although, yeah – not feeling the hot dog and french toast combo. perhaps sausage would be better?
all in all, a very yummy week it seems!

Sausages! That’s what I was thinking it should have been! I love sausages. I’ll take it any day over bacon.

How cute! LOL re the raw ingredients inside a tortilla… but if she called it a wrap and added some dipping sauce on the side she might be able to get away with it.

Oh my, doesn’t she look adorable and so very skilled in the kitchen!
Such a great idea!!!

Thanks. She’s already starting to take over. Everytime she sees me in the kitchen, I hear her little footsteps getting closer and eventually, “Can I cook too, mom?!” LOL
That week must have been a great experience for her! It is really useful that they learn to make these things, and of course, they can help you in the kitchen from now! Unfortunately, the video doesn’t appear in my browser window, I may have some problem with my flash plugin.

She had a lot of fun that week. I suspect she will do it again next year.
And the video should be fixed shortly.
Serious question – how young can you send your kids to these cooking camps? Like … do you think 3 is too young? Because – other than the boiled hotdog and the burger (same reasons) I’m totally in. I really need to get the twins enrolled in a program so I can do more blogging

For that class, they had to be at least 6. Trust me, if they allowed 3 year olds in there, I would’ve totally enrolled my toddler too. I’ve seriously been slacking these days in the blogging department too. Hehehe.
Wow! That menu looks pretty cool, your child could help your form now on in the kitchen! I wish I would have some help in the everyday cooking…

The menu was pretty good, although I would have preferred they had healthier meals. Anyway, I look forward to her helping me in the kitchen more often – someday. Right now, my kitchen is too small for two people to cook at the same time – even if she is puny. LOL.
Do you ever watch Fr. Leo Patalinghug from Gracebeforemeals.com? He has a cooking show on EWTN every weekend, Saturday afternoon, I think. If your kids like to cook, Fr. Leo’s a good teacher.
Me…I cooked this weekend for company. I made Poisson Cru (a Tahitian raw fish salad, but the fish is chemically cooked in lime juice), Fettucine Alfredo with scallops and crawfish tails, and a different cheese than Romano, Carmelized Salmon steaks with warm potato salad, and slow-baked ribs…we never eat that good as when we have company, so we tend to invite people over at least once a month…otherwise, it’s sinegang, and corned beef, sometimes alimasag and hipon, and lots of manok.
I been busy lately, sorry I haven’t been by.

I haven’t watch Fr. Leo. To be honest, we don’t have cable or satellite at home. Actually, we barely watch tv, if at all. Right now, the only reason it’s on is because of the Olympics. Other than that, I hv to wait until I get to visit my parents and watch on their DirecTV. Hahaha!
But geez! Company or not, your dishes sound yummy! Corned beef is not a very healthy choice – but super yummy. I haven’t eaten alimasag for a long time. And manok? Well, that’s always welcome around here – any way it’s cooked!
If you have a computer, you can stream EWTN. So now, you can watch. Good that you’re not very much into TV, though…Too much Wa Wa Wee (spelling) can be dangerous! LOL.
It was yummy, one of my friends said it was the best ribs he ever ate…Corned beef, when you slow cook it, not the canned stuff, is healthy if you take the fat off, and add a big ole’ chunk of steamed cabbage! As for crabs, we like to get the live dungeness crabs at Ranch 99 and cook them up cajun style, as a treat, maybe once or twice a year. To show you our personal frugality, if WE want to eat steak, we have to invite our pastor, who always wants seconds…:)

Yep. We do sometimes watch on the computer. The problem actually, is finding the time to watch.
And that’s too fuuny – about your pastor and steak!
IT is funny…not only does he eat a second steak, he usually brings his pastoral associate along with him.
I’m not complaining. God is good to us, He’s guarded us from cancer, male internet syndrome (ask if you want to know what THAT means…), a broken hip, and has given me job security in these, our troubled economic and social times. And I love to cook, and my wife likes to display her gourmet asawa…
So we do what we can to be a family to our priest, in fact, we have about 5 of them adopted, as well as deacons and their families. No empty-nesters, us!

Oooh! Party at your house! Stop it already. You are making me drool over here.
Well, you know Pinoy hospitality…always over the top, to the best of your means…
David recently posted..Marriage-unique for a reason
I miss Pinoy hospitality. I don’t live in a Filipino community and I don’t really have any Filipino friends around here…..*sigh* Can you say “homesick?”
